SQIJ User Guide - Smartphone

Installation

You can install the Sqij application software in one of three ways:
  • Install directly to your Smartphone using the mobile Internet Explorer (install over-the-air)
From your Smartphone, start the Internet Explorer application, then go to this Address:
    sqij.com/cab
  • Run the Desktop installer from HERE.  (Select the "Run" option after clicking)

  • Download the CAB from the desktop, then copy to your Smartphone.
Download this file then copy it using ActiveSync to your Smartphone. Start the File Manager application on your Smartphone, and open the SPCab.CAB file.

Starting the Application

Once the CAB file has installed the SQIJ software, there should be a new icon under the 'Start' menu of your Smartphone. Select this icon and wait for the application to do its initial startup operations. This can take up to 30 seconds. Note: you only need to do this once, and each time you select the SQIJ application there will be no perceptible delay.

Setting Your Preferences

Once the Sqij application has started, select the 'Preferences' menu (if it hasn't already been selected for you).

The Recon Intvl is the time interval between attempts to reconnect to the Sqij server if your connection fails for some reason.

The 'busy' message if an auto-response your friends will receive if you have set the 'Busy' state in the application.

Signing In

Select either the 'Sign In' item in the list, or press the left menu key to sign into the Sqij server.

The first time you do this the server will recognize that you are an unknown user, and put you in the Sqij Lobby. Just follow the prompts here to either establish your existing user-name and password, which you may have setup on the Sqij web site, or create a new user-name and password.

At present, the application will remember your user-name and password, and will Sign In with these on subsquent Sign Ins.

Note: the version of the Sqij application software is displayed at the bottom of this screen, eg. "0.9.1.0". If you encounter problems, you may need to quote this.

Setting up Security

The first time you sign in, the server will prompt you to register your public key. Just follow the prompt and a public/private key pair will be generated (RSA 1024-bit). The private key is kept on your device, and the public key is uploaded to the Sqij server. This is so you can engage in Secure Mode chats with other Sqij users.

To the right is an example of a secure chat session. If the other person has setup their security, you will see xxx is in Secure Mode. When in this mode, any messages you send to them are automatically encrypted on your device, transmitted, then decrypted on the destination device, with no eavesdropping possible! (not even by US)!

NOTE: both devices need to have at least the 1.0.3.0 version of the client software!

The Main Screen - My Sqij's

The My Sqij's screen shows you all the Applets and Users you have in your personal list, with an icon representing each.  You can navigate these icon by using the phone's arrow keys, and using the middle Enter key to start the Sqij (ie. start applet or start chat with user).

The right menu key has a number of actions for the currently selected icon (like Remove, Move Up, or Move Down).

This menu also contains the Sign Out item, which you select if you wish to disconnect. Note: if you disconnect you cannot receive Alerts. Normally, you just leave the application Signed In, and use your phone's other functions while Sqij remains running in the background.

Note: the number in parenthesis at the bottom-right shows the network traffic in Kb since you Signed In. This is a system-wide statistic, not just network traffic from Sqij.

The Alerts Screen

From the main screen, press the left menu key to switch to the Alerts screen.
Here you can view the incoming alerts you have received. Scroll up and down the list using the phone's arrow keys and open an alert message by pressing the Enter key (middle key).

The right menu key is used to Delete alerts, once you don't need them any more.

Press the left My Sqij's menu key to go back to the Main Screen view.

Note: the phone's 1 and 2 numeric keys are used to toggle the 'Busy' state, and the 'Mute sound' state (the state can been seen in the status strip at the bottom).

Using Applets (aka SQIJ's)

Once you have started a SQIJ from the main screen it will present applet-specific content, but each applet should behave in a consistent manner. The Chess Server SQIJ shown here presents a simple menu, which you can navigate using the phone's arrow keys, selecting a link (in blue) by pressing the Enter key. Note: The selected link will have a box drawn around it.

Also, in pages like this, where there are numbered items, you can press the phone's numeric keys (0..9) to select the related link.

The left menu key will either show Exit or Back. Selecting this when showing 'Exit' will close the applet, and return you to the Main Screen. 'Back' navigates to the previous page this applet was showing you.
The screen opposite is from the News Reader applet. This applet employs two common features: the 'toolbar' and the 'rich-list'. Initially, the rich-list will be selected, showing the selected item in blue. You can select a rich-list item either by pressing the right arrow key or by pressing the Enter key. The green arrow in an item usually indicates that selecting this goes to a sub-list.

To navigate to the toolbar press the Up arrow key until a box is drawn around the 'Search' box, or the 'GO' button. Press the Right/Left arrow keys to navigate between the elements in the toolbar, like the 'feedback' link.

When the 'Search' text-box has the box drawn around it, simply start typing using the phone's keypad, and you will see characters entered into the search box. Press the Enter key to submit this text for seaching.

To navigate back to the rich-list, press the Down arrow key a number of times until the rich-list draws the selected item in blue!
Context Menus.

While the rich-list is active, you can press the '*' key to popup the context-menu. Use the Up/Down and Enter keys to select a menu item. If you want to cancel, ie. not select a menu item, just press the '*' key again.
When in a sub-list, you will notice that the left menu key is labelled 'Back'. Pressing this navigates back to the parent list. In these situations you can also press the Left arrow key to go back. (opposite to pressing the 'right' arrow key which selected this sub-list)

Also, in lists like this, pressing the '*' key will show the context-menu for this list.
Selecting an article in the News Reader applet, for example, will result in a normal page to be displayed which, like the chess example above, presents information and a link.

NOTE:  The light-blue background here, and the '+' icon, indicates that is an exander. Expanders always result in the current page being modified, with details inserted at the location of the link.

This is different to links that result in a new page being displayed (and the 'Back' menu key).

Text Responses

Sometimes an applet may need some text/number response from you. In these situations you will see a textbox appear like in the opposite screen.

Initially, the text entry should be in T9 mode, but you can change this using the standard '*' key.

Once you have finished entering your response, press the Enter key to send the response.

If you wish to cancel this, ie. not send, you can press the 'Back' menu key.
When the textbox appears like here, the entered text will be sent securely (using RSA 1024 bit encryption).
Sometimes an applet will ask you to select from a large list, and will present a textbox with a list area below it, like here.

In these situations, just enter the first letter (or more depending on the applet) to narrow down the list below.

Press the down arrow key to select the first item in the list. Use the up/down keys to change the selection, then press the Enter key to make your selection.

Chatting with other Users

When you select a user's icon from the main screen, you enter a chat screen, with your conversation above, and text entry box at the bottom.

After entering some message, press the Enter key to send the message.

The recipient will receive an Alert if they are signed-in, with their configured sound played to notify them. If they open the Alert from the Alerts screen, they also will be put into a chat screen.

Here you can select the Font... menu item (as shown) to write messages in various fonts/colors/sizes.
You should see your message in the various font(s) you have selected. Once finished, press the Enter key to send the message. The recipient should receive it within seconds. (given both of your wireless internet connections are OK)
Once you send a message, you will see your own replies rendered in a gray background in the window above.

The other user's messages will be shown as soon as they are received. Note: you will not be played a notifaction sound. Sounds are only for Alerts.
